Turkey Vulture

Cathartes aura

Description:

This majestic but arguably slightly homely species is found throughout the Americas. Here spotted in New Jersey. Recognisable by their red, bareskinned head and jet black body, Turkey vultures are large birds that feed almost exclusively on carrion. Their role as ecosystem 'janitors' cannot be underestimated.
