Sanderling; Correlimos Tridáctilo and Little Stint; Correlimos Menudo

Calidris alba & Calidris minuta

Description:

These are easy to separate by size when they are together but not so easy when they are separate at the edge of a calm lagoon as their feeding actions are similar, although the Sanderlings will run in and out of the sea as it moves in and out after the waves have broken and they generally run faster than the Little Stints. The Little Stints also have a slightly more brownish plumage and clearer V-shaped stripe over the eyes.

Habitat:

Lagoon near coast in volcanic semi-desert.

Notes:

We saw these birds in the same place every day, sometimes perhaps 20 or more Sanderlings and a couple of Little Stints, and we noticed that the Sanderlings would often bully the Little Stints as in this instance to force them away from their favoured feeding area by a few feet!
