Pycnonotus jacosus
Cheeky-looking bird with a black crest, red and white marks on cheek (red mark on cheek missing in juvenile..photo number2). The black band around the neck is interrupted (sub species emeri??) . White belly.
Very common in the Andamans.
In Port Blair where the British established a penal colony (Cellular Jail), these birds were the only cheerful presence our Independence fighters saw. On Ross Island it is common to see groups of 10-15 of these fearless birds come quite close to the tourists or to scavenge in garbage bins. These photos of the birds feasting on papaya (Carica papaya) were taken on Havelock Island. These birds have a melodious and joyful call.
