Golden Apple Snail

Pomacea canaliculata

Description:

Mollusca; Ampullariidae; Pomacea; P. canaliculata (Lamarck, 1819). This is a freshwater snail which is a serious pest of rice in the Philippines. It it a brown globular shaped mollusk with some orange-yellow markings. The egg clusters are bright pink.

Habitat:

This snail was spotted at the edge of the rice field behind our house and the egg cluster was spotted a few feet from the snail. I could see many egg clusters further inside the growing rice crop and from experience I knew that there would be many snails there also. I wanted to get more photos, but the rice was at a critical stage in its development and I did not want to go wading in and disturb it.
