The fruits are gone but they were very much like nutmeg, with a red coating over a brown seed. I was told it could be used as nutmeg but the one I tried had zero flavour.

Hola, no, we did that for a while. When you grate them they do look rather like nutmeg.
I wonder if you have to dry it first, or some other process to bring out the flavor.
