Sockeye Salmon

Oncorhynchus nerka

Description:

Spawning adults have crimson red bodies and green heads.

Habitat:

. Fulton River in boreal forest/mountain forest area.

Notes:

These salmon were photographed at the Fulton River Spawning Channels (the largest spawning channels in the world) just south of Granisle BC. This is the biggest run I have seen in this location in the 11 years I have lived in this area. When they say "you could walk across the river on the backs of the fish" they really mean it this year. I love watching these fish and all the creatures that eat them. You can see black bears, grizzlies, bald eagles, gulls and osprey all standing on the bridge of the counting fence. One of my favorite places on earth.
