Description:

Sun to partial shade; range of soil types; best flowers in full sun; dislikes high pH Blooms scarlet, red, pink, or white single to double flowers in late winter to early spring before leaves emerge; 2 to 2.5" edible yellowish apple-shaped fruit

Habitat:

They are native to eastern Asia in Japan, China and Korea

Notes:

I classify this among the "Old Fashioned" plants that unfortunately have become unpopular in the newer American landscape gardens, for the same reason all these types have, they grow very large and need a lot pruning by the average American homeowners standards
