Description:

Erect perennial , 12-30" tall. 1-2 whorls of leaves, lower has 5-11 leaves, upper has 3 leaves. Upper leaves are typically reddened at the base.Flowers are nodding greenish yellow on slender stalks from the upper whorl, blooming in April-May. Produces round dark purple berries. Rhizome is edible, tastes like cucumber.

Habitat:

Forests of eastern USA.
