Spring peeper (male)

Pseudacris crucifer

Description:

The Spring Peeper is a small chorus frog widespread throughout the eastern USA and Canada. This frog has a vocal sac located by its throat, which expands and deflates like a balloon to create a short and distinct peeping sound. Only males have the ability to make this loud high-pitched noise, and they use it to attract mates.

Habitat:

Cumberland Trail, Ashland City, Tennessee.

Notes:

This little guy was extremely vocal until we started to photograph him - then he would not oblige us by puffing up his vocal sac for a photo!

Not especially - we found about half a dozen just sitting on the trail yesterday!

Are they shy?

Yes this little guy had a very impressive voice for his size! You are probably more likely to see them if you look for them with a flashlight after dark!

There are so many of these near my house! It is very deafening at night! Unfortunately, I am unsure how to find them.
