Black-tailed Prairie Dog

Cynomys ludovicianus

Description:

Could be mismatch with the Richardson's Ground Squirrel. The Prairie Dog is larger and more brownish than the squirrel.

Habitat:

The prairie dog typically inhabits open grasslands. The US Midwest and Canadian Prairies once offered such habitat. The transformation of the Prairies into pastures and crops, and the subsequent extermination of the rodents led to a massive loss of the historical habitat in Canada. The Prairie Dogs could only be encountered in the Grassland National Park, SK, in Canada.
