Hmm... It seems both small and pale compared to what I see in Ohio, but that could be a local adaptation to conditions. One dorsal fin or two?

This is likely another darter, but difficult to tell which one - they are easier to identify in the spring in breeding colors. I'd suggest looking up which ones are known in that watershed and just memorizing them. Probably only 4 to 6 per river, and they're pretty distinctively named.

Lithobates are a subset of the Rana species native to Latin America. The North American species is Rana catesbeiana.

Water scorpions are insects, not arachnids. The 'stinger' is actually a breathing tube.

Strange how flowers fade as they age...and as the leaves come out. But those spicebushes came straight from the nursery fridge with labels on them. And grew spicebush fruit. So I don't know what else they'd be.
