Sign In to followI love penguins too, it was so great to see them in their natural habitat!
Just as an FYI, I'm having trouble finding a definitive source on whether the genus is Euthalia or Bassarona. Butterflies are way out of my field of expertise, so any insect folks that can confirm would be welcome :D
Gosh, poor thing! I think what you've got here is a Great Marquis! I'll try and find a good reference page for it, but here's the stub of a Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassarona_d...
Thanks Hema, it certainly was!
I think they are locally abundant here, as in they're pretty common in some areas, but then in others I never see them. Definitely one of the most recognisable fungi out there!
Brilliant, glad that resource was a help!
Very cute! They're so pretty too, with their iridescent feathers. Lovely spotting :D
Poor little guy! I'd bet that a gull or something managed to pick it off. I love ghost crabs, they're so sweet. Great find!
You're right, it's not a bee! It's a kind of fly belonging to the family Syrphidae. There are many kinds out there, and I'm not familiar with the ones you'd get in the States. Have a look over here though, see if you can narrow it down! http://bugguide.net/node/view/196
Neat! Those teeth look like premolars, which means it's some kind of grazing herbivore. My best guess is this is the bottom jaw of a sheep or cow. Would be really cool to know how old this is!
