I live in the Natural State, with many lakes, state/national parks, and trails in the surrounding areas, and study it all as a life hobby.

I'm pretty sure you both are right. I dismissed them when I first saw them because the pictures I'd seen, the cracking and peeling was so varied and the patches were smaller, but I'd wager it was peeling so uniform because of the moisture--it'd been raining in that area for days before I found it. Thank you so much for the information!
You have a point! I will drop it down to genus until I can find more specific info.
What an amazing species!
Thank you so much! And I have added this to the mission as requested! :)
That's a lot closer than I was able to get, it's certainly got the right shape/look to it!
I see that, the abdomen pattern and boldness of the thorax stripe is very much closer to this specimen. Crazy how (at least at a glance) similar the two species in question are. Thank you very much.
Thank you! I felt like there had to be something out there I was missing, even with the Blue Dasher Western varient. It still didn't feel quite right. About to head out to work but I will get this (and several others) updated asap when I'm home later!
How beautiful, I had to look that up, all I've ever seen are red!
That's the most interesting robber fly I've ever seen! Definitely adding it to the "Must Find" list.
