Thanks Simone! It does look a lot like cow parsnip, but I'm pretty sure it's not because the leaves are so different.
I think I'm going to go with water hemlock for now because of the leaves. I'm still not certain, though...hopefully someone here can confirm!

I'm not sure of the var. persicina...someone else was insisting it was guessowii, but the pics I've seen of either variety are mostly much brighter coloured. Do you know how to tell the difference definitively?

I'm not sure...I looked that up, and it looks like it mostly grows directly on wood, no? These were on the ground. It was in the woods, though, so there may have been some wood underneath. It does seem to look like a few of the pics I've seen of armillaria gallica.
