To be fair it could also be Gasteracantha sanguinolenta as they are in South Africa as well. Can someone help ID this one? :D

Wonderful little bird! Definitely a Calidris - It's portuguese common name would be Pilrito-da-areia :D
Looks like a sand-wasp Bembix sp. problem is there are 9 species in Portugal (if im not mistaken) but with the spotting pictures and location being near Faro I'd say it's probably Bembix oculata http://naturdata.com/Bembix-oculata-2466...
