A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
I am trying to document all the wildlife on two different family properties - an East Texas tree farm and a Central Texas weekend place.

Sign In to followGorgeous! I love the black background - it sets off the flower so well.
And since digital cameras have that delay after you press the button, it's even harder to get the shot you want! I just take a lot and sort them out afterward. :) Thank you for the very kind comment!
I held my breath the whole time I was taking pictures, afraid to scare it off! :)
Thank you, I am thrilled!
Thank you for the nomination, and all the kind comments too. I was so happy that it stayed still long enough for me to grab my camera and focus!
Just a few months before I saw it, I had been at a Texas Master Naturalist training on animal tracking, and the TPWD guy who gave the talk, said that he had been shocked to see otter tracks at his place in Giddings. If it hadn't been for that talk, I would have thought someone had released an otter from a zoo or something, I had no idea they were still roaming around in Texas!
Okay, I'm glad to have found a nearby expert! I am trying to learn the snakes but I don't know if I will ever keep them straight. I just read Alan Tennant's description of Eastern racer habitat likes, and it fits where we found this young snake. And I didn't get any pictures, but I have seen a plain gray snake up there too, and now I am thinking that's an adult Eastern racer.
Okay, I am looking at Werler and Dixon's Texas Snakes, and their distribution map shows a lot of specimens in my area, including 2 in my part of the county, and they also say that the Eastern Yellow-bellied racer doesn't occupy the pine forests of East Texas. So that's why I guessed Mexican racer. But I will go check the link now. Thanks!
Thank you. I think this is one of the coolest wild animals I have ever seen outside of a park!
