A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
The Wikipedia article states that the Familiar Bluet is native to the US and Canada... Unfortunately I (and the damselfly in question) are in Germany.
What an amazing series. Makes one wonder what one might have missed already... ;)
Thanks for your quick answer. I couldn't see the second one well enough to determine it was brown, but from a very much manipulated version of the photo I'd say at least reddish-brown. I'm sure it wasn't black. ;)
Thanks, Lenny!
Thanks Pedro and Malcom, I appreciate the help. I'm really not good at the whole dimorphism thing. ;)
@Malcom - I thought I saw a hint of white at the throat, that's why I followed Jemma's suggestion. And thanks for the explanation about the red kite.
Does anybody have a good tip for field guides? I have the German edition of Birds of Britain and Europe by Rob Hume and am waiting for The Clements Checklist of Birds of the World, plus a small book promising id in 3 easy steps (never trust an ad... :D) called "Vögel" by Einhard Bezzel, which I hate. It needn't be in German, English is just fine.
Thanks, LandmarkExpert.
Thanks, I've read some more yesterday and I can say I would be more confident if I could see more of the sides / wings.
Thanks, gaston1 and valef1.
That would be great. Freiburg is one of our overnight destinations for next year's vacation, so it'd be good to know what one can see.
You can mail ma at ursula.fricke@googlemail.com. Thanks in advance.
