A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
It was widely abundant in Assam (northeast of India) some 20 years back. It started disappearing and now its not seen at all. We used to play with them, they were quite harmless, used to crawl on us and fly back to the leaves. It is so good to see it again. The last time I saw one was around 1994. They used to appear in different colours, mostly golden, metallic green and sometime red with black spots. As kids we used to put them on our fingers making it look like an accessory and they'd lie still for a while and start crawling around later. It sounds creepy but they were so beautiful that it hardly used to feel like a bug. In Assamese we call it "Hunalee puk" :)
