This is the third urban BioBlitz by ESA scientists and students at one urban site close to Laurelhurst Park, in the Laurelhurst and surrounding neighborhoods, and one urban site close to a natural area, Keller Woods, in the Hillsdale neighborhood. Our contribution during this field trip will be to characterize the flora and fauna (especially moths and caterpillars, and birds) of the site, identify significant native and introduced species, provide baseline data for a proposed restoration program, and prepare a report with recommendations for use by the Portland State University organizers. Portland State University and the Audubon Society are at the beginning stages in monitoring the landscape level ecological impacts from the sum of these small restoration projects using volunteer help. Residential areas offer an opportunity to impact private landscaping practices. Individual homeowners who restored their backyard greenspaces will be involved along with participating scientists in helping monitor of the cumulative ecological impacts.
