Swainson's Hawk

Buteo swainsoni

Description:

Beautiful light color morph of the Swainson's Hawk - there were several in a multi-acre field we were driving by and I went to investigate. Their primary source of food are grasshoppers & locusts. The field had been freshly mowed and the hawks were circling and swooping in for 'the kill' of the bugs that had been routed out by the mowing. This one in particular was very curious, yet cautious. I laid on my back in the pickup bed to shoot the 1st photo. He looked down straight at me because he'd probably never see anyone do that before.

Thank you! I'm new to the area since getting married 2 years ago - so I'd never seen them before moving to Kaufman County. My husband & I saw one near our house once, but I didn't have a camera and we didn't know what it was. They're a fairly common site after the farmers plow their fields.
