new seedling with cotyledons and first pair of true leaves
river bank
I was going thru a list of monocots and like you commented most of them were grasses .Thanks!
Tough one.poison oak has leaves shaped like that. But then again the true leave of cotton wood have a different shape than the leaves that have reached maturity.Very interesting spot!
It is a dicot (dicotyledonous or two cotyledons). Common monocots are grasses and grains including corn and lilies.
here is an image of a cottonwood seedling http://www.ipm.msu.edu/weeds-nursery/Cmn... it looks quite different
Anna ,I am not sure if the cotton wood leaves are narrow. This link shows them as fairly broad.

The pair of brighter green leaves in the center are the true leaves, the thicker leaves are the cotyledons. I looked up images for cottonwood and those leaves are narrower, almost strap like. Cottonwood seeds are pretty small, they float on the wind. Considering the size of the cotyledons, I think it would be a larger seed.
or is it the sapling breaking thru the seed? the upper two leaf like structure could be the seed?
anna, did you notice that the pair of leaves below have a different shape and that they do look like cotton wood. the pair above is shaped differently.
It's the first time I've been to this park and I'm not familiar with the tree species there. The leaves are just starting to come out. I do know there were cottonwood, pawpaw, and sycamore. I saw a lot of these little seedlings, all about the same size.
Was it under some tree?May be that could give you a clue. What are the majority of trees around this/
