Black-eyed Susans

Rudbeckia hirta

Description:

This wildflower grows on a wide range of soil types all throughout the United States. It is a perennial herb that is short lived. It can survive through harsh temperatures and is not challenged by any insects or diseases. This flower is not hard to find, one must simply look for it's flashy bright yellow petals and dark brown center! The flowers come off of long stems that are nestled in a big bundle/bunch of leaves. These leaves are both ovate shaped and thin lanceolate shaped with alternate veins. Along with these attributes, this wildflower serves many purposes, one being that when it is combined with other grasses it can help control erosion. It grows easily amongst other plants, meaning competition is not a problem.

Habitat:

As I stated in the description box, this wildflower can grow on a wide range of soil types. Although, this statement is true, it virtually grows best in open woods, fields, and prairie like environments.
