Paropsisterna sp.
An active beetle with several somewhat broken red vittae on each elytron. The pronotum has a red rim and a slight large submarginal pit. The pronotum is somewhat translucent. The puncturation striae bear red lines in alternating interstices.
Found under bark of a white smooth barked eucalyptus.
This is not an uncommon species. There are three possible names used for this species. Paropsisterna octolineata http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/870... Paropstiserna vittipennis http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/799... http://morwellnp.pangaean.net/cgi-bin/sh... The following insect is confirmed to be P. octolineata by Dr. Chris Reid which I accept as correct. http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_... My insect has a red stripe along the margin of the elytra and I think it is different. It may possibly be P. vittipennis or semivittata. There are some parts of the keys that confuse me and I cannot confidently determine an ID. Vittipennis (= stripes + wings) should have alternating convex interstices which this one does not have, leaving semivittata (= half + stripes).
