White-tailed deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

Medium to small size deer. When running they stick their tails up in the air exposing the bright white fur underneath.

Habitat:

woods, forests found in most US states - though those found further north tend to be much larger.

Notes:

Was in my front yard looking for lizards and bugs when a heard of white-tails came through. They frequent my property so often undisturbed that one of them felt safe enough to lay under a tree. Normally around this time of year I start to see the spotted fawns, but so far just the older youngsters have appeared (those that are considered yearlings and no longer sport spots)
