Great photo Emma,Cormoran it's a amazing bird(i have it as portuguese mission symbol:),only after began in noah(6 months) i be able to se them live,in Porto,and...they are extreme adapted birds,like higth competition atletic humans:)super ergonomic bodys,almost 100% waterproof,great swimer's and very well suceded from what i se in the river Douro estuary,they cach a fish at list the half of the trie's,what is a fantastic average,this one is in is philosophic time,taking a breack from the daily rotine:) great blue in the sky
HI Bird Lady! Yes this is a Double Crested Cormorant. i am quite eager to see the Brandts and Neotropic cormorants too. The Double Crest is not very obvious always. But this month we were able to see those. Could be breeding plumage. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/102... Thanks as always!
Hi Emma! This really does look like a Double-crested Cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus, as far as I can tell. The only other species that does sometimes appear in southern California, that has an orange throat pouch is the Neotropic Cormorant, which has a more pointed throat pouch that does not come up above the eyes. The orange on your bird does go up around the eye.

In this plumage it does resemble a darter. Anhingas have snake like necks though.
