passerculus sandwichensis
I thought I was watching a sparrow. It never flew away but just hopped through the heavy grass. It had a longer neck than any sparrow type birds I've seen. I'm wondering if it was a juvenile because the id of this bird isn't matching anything I can find in my guides. Savanna Sparrow?
It does look a bit like a Seaside Sparrow, but that species does not appear to have a crest like this one. Also, the Savannah Sparrow's winter distribution includes all of GA, so perhaps he's hanging out a little longer than usual?
Does anyone thing Seaside Sparrow? I think Savannah is out of range this time of year or close to.
The crest is unusual. I noticed that the California Towhee had a crest twice when it was caught by surprise.May be it is a reaction like apeachg says.
Savannah sparrow is the only thing I could come up with as well, but this one seems to have quite a long neck and pronounced crest. Perhaps just a reaction to a potential predator (such as a photographer :P )?
