Sceloporus undulatus

Description:

Small lizard. Didn't see any blue on his belly.

Werdgent,i identified this as Coast Range Fence Lizard. There was no mistaking its blue belly. Would have liked to see under the belly.Have never flipped a lizard ever!

This link describes habitat, and it seems similar to where you found this one.

It could be Scleroporus, now that I am looking at more pictures...

Has to be a Sceloporus, because they're the only lizards in North Carolina with keeled scales.

Did he have any blue below him?

Scleroporus doesn't have any horns like your species though. Texas Horned Lizard would be best guess from this link:

Ha I was just looking at that page too. I think it must be a Scleroporus. There aren't too many species here in NC. Maybe a female?

the pine cone might not be all that bad!
Have developed an interest in lizards. Would be interesting to know what kind this is.
Does look scaly and spiny kind.No blue could rule out fence lizards.Snout is short.
Nice picture. Best bet is wait for goody to see it,
