Brimstone

Gonepteryx rhamni

Description:

When Brimstone butterflies rest on foliage, the angular shape and the strong veining of their wings closely resembles leaves, as can be seen in photo #1. Males have bright yellow-green underwings and yellow upperwings. Female butterflies are very pale green, almost white.

Habitat:

Feeding on the Lobelia in my garden.

Notes:

Fun fact: it is though that the word 'butterfly' originates from the yellow buttery colour of male Brimstones.

Thank you Leuba! Nice to be back - It's been way too long. Lobelias are very pretty, they make a very good backdrop for the butterflies! :)

That's a lovely shot with lobelias. The butterflies are relatively plain yet so attractive, aren't they ?
