Red-Bellied Woodpecker (male)

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

Striking black and white woodpecker with red cap and nape. Oddly enough, there is no visible red on his belly, but he clearly couldn't be called a Red-Headed Woodpecker, because that bird is red on his face, cheeks and head.

Habitat:

Forest Preserve, Northern Illinois
