Calypte anna
A male Anna's hummingbird showing off his feathers and colorful plumage. Anna's is the only North American hummingbird species with a red crown. It has an iridescent bronze-green back, a pale grey chest and belly, and green flanks. Its bill is long and straight.
Spotted along the BPA trail near Celebration Park in Federal Way, Wa. It stayed on top of a blackberry thicket for most of the time. It flew away a couple of times, but would always come back to the same spot. Anna's Hummingbirds live in a wide variety of habitats, including open woods. Chaparral is their traditional habitat, although in recent years they have been found more often in suburban gardens where hummingbird feeders and exotic plantings provide them with food throughout the year. In Washington, Anna's Hummingbirds are most often found in suburban parks, gardens, and coastal valleys.
Anna's hummingbirds are found along the western coast of North America, from southern Canada to northern Baja California, and inland to southern and central Arizona, extreme southern Nevada and southeastern Utah, and western Texas.
