Asterocampa clyton
A brushfoot that is often found with Hackberry Emperors, A. celtis. The forewing is an orange-brown color with pale orange-yellow spots. The underside is mainly gray-brown with the forewing having some black and pale yellowish markings. Two bars on the forewing costa.
Host plat is Hackberry trees.
This one was sunning in the early morning. It usually is found on any good nectar source or rotting fruit. For comparison, a second photo has a Variegated Fritillary, E. claudia, sunning just below. These two butterflies are often confused by beginning watchers.
