Common Aerial Yellowjacket - queen

Dolichovespula arenaria

Description:

Common Aerial Yellowjackets usually build aerial nests in trees or shrubs, a habit shared with true hornets, but on occasion have been found to nest under ground, common to Vespula species. Nests are built with chewed plant fibers & weathered wood. They forage for live prey including grasshoppers, spittlebug adults, leafhoppers, caterpillars, tree crickets, flies and spiders. These insects are chewed and fed to their young.

Habitat:

Northeastern - northwestern North America. Woodland areas.

Notes:

Observed on American Holly (Ilex opaca).
