Kī, Lāʻī - Ti Leaf

Cordyline fruticosa

Description:

The ti leaf can be green or red.The leaf can grow up to 12.5 cm and it has a smooth surface. The leaf is long and pointed at the top. The tip usually curls inward a little. The stem is about 5 cm wide. Fruits can only be found in the red ti leaf, which are red berries. The plant also has flowers, which range from white to purple.

Habitat:

This spotting was made in Kapolei Knolls. Ti leaf can be found near rain forest or in wet areas.

Notes:

Ti leaf is Polynesian introduced. In the Hawaiian culture, it was used as medicine. It could be used to wrap things and was known as the kinolau of Lono. It could also be used to warn off evil spirits.
