Spring Pea

Lathyrus vernus

Description:

Is a perennial plant belonging to the family of the Lathyrusen which can reach a height of 20 to 40cm. The flowering period is from April to June. Its upright stems grow on a rhizome, are slightly hairy. The leaves are suspended in 2 to 4 pairs of oval / lancet-shaped. Clusters of 3 to 7 pairs of red to blue-green flowers that are ± 2 cm in size. After flowering, they form a brown pod of 4 to 6 cm in 8 to 14 seeds.

Habitat:

The plant has a preference for moderately moisted, shaded places, with calcareous soil. It can therefore be found mainly in forest edges, woodlands, thickets and hedges. The range extends from Central Europe to Russia.
