Chocolate Tube Slime Mold

Stemonitis sp.

Description:

Brown black fungus that seemed to grow in circular shapes. It appears to start as a black ring and grows straight up as dark brown. It created a brown powdery dust when touched. It did not collapse after being touched. At first glance I thought it was a bunch of caterpillars.

Habitat:

Riparian hardwood forest.

Notes:

This was spotted on the Cicada Trail at Lake Lewisville Environmental Learning Area.

Thanks Jakubko. I know nothing about molds, but find them fascinating to photograph. :)

Awesome find! Many Stemonitis are lumped together as S. fusca, but I think there are some other species that need microscopic examination to distinguish.
