Description:

It has a glossy black top to the head and a white throat. The underparts and the back are a light grey-fawn in colour with the wings and the feathers of the long (16–20 cm) tail are an azure blue. It inhabits various types of coniferous (mainly pine) and broadleaf forest, including parks and gardens in the eastern populations.

Love the first photo - he was perched on the grass when the wind suddenly picked up and the only way he could stay balanced was to strike this pose!

Thanks, Dan! I didn't know that these birds were split into two populations, one of them being here (Portugal) and Spain, the other being further east - learn something new every day! This was a bird on my list 'to get a better shot of' - luckily I got these yesterday! They are as shy as anything here.
