Eurycnema goliath
Australia's second largest stick insect, heavy and growing to around 26cm, bright green colour with yellow patterning, sharp pronged feet enable Goliaths to climb and hang on to foliage and branches. Very well camouflaged, papery wings are transparent with green tint and pink/purple underneath, patterns underneath the insect help to ward off enemies, both male and female can fly but females not so good due to the heavier body.
Found in most parts of Australia in wooded regions, not in arid zones.

Thanks Mark. Yes, the size of these insects is hard to fit in a 'box'. We have seen quite a few recently and the colour is amazing, such bright green and yellow and the pink under the wings...you can't beat nature!
Wow great find. I wish we found those around Melbourne. Hard to fit in a square picture too :-)
