Sinuous Bee Fly

Hemipenthes sinuosa

Description:

A small Bee fly - less than 1/4" - with an irregular wavy border of the black area on the wing. Larvae are parasites (hyperparasitic) of parasitic bees & wasps. Adults nectar from flowers on low vegetation.

Habitat:

Most of North America. Open areas with sandy or well-drained soil and sparse or low vegetation.

Notes:

Observed nectaring on Sedum.
