Orange-headed Thrush

Geokichla citrina

Description:

Yes, the head is orange in colour as are the underparts and chest. The wings are a sort of ashy blue with a short white streak. There is a black streaky pattern that sort of ' elongates' the eyes. This one is a male; colours are more vibrant.

Habitat:

Heart of Kolkata city very close to the American Embassy and at least two hotels and nursing homes, a mall, not to mention a stream of traffic and pavement shops. Photographed with one hand with the other balancing a bag and a packet of spices.I was praying as I fished out my camera that the bird would not be spooked. The actual place where I saw this is a quasi religious ashram of sorts where they have a smallish lawn outside the outlet where they sell stuff. The best part is that they observe silence and do not disturb anything. So once you enter their gates, it is a haven and peace for the ears. I was getting into the car (in the parking lot) when I saw a small movement at the place where the lawn almost ends...and there was this male thrush turning over the leaf litter looking for lunch. I was transfixed...who would have thought.

Thanks, triggsturner...with birds I think it is their graciousness to allow us to photograph...how I chased after the news that this species has been sighted in Chintamani Kar Bird sanctuary (Kolkata)...and then I spot it at an arm's length from a car park...where just outside the boundary wall there was manic traffic....

Fantastic spotting Sukanya. I have tried many times to catch up with this species but alas have always failed. You did a brilliant job of catching this little guy. Very well done.
