Black-shouldered (winged) Kite

Elanus caeruleus

Description:

Elegant bird. Compact body shape. Face is white...rather owlish. Wings and tail feathers are more charcoal than really jet black. Eyes gleam red-gold like gems.

Habitat:

It is extremely common in Gujarat and we saw many sitting on electrical lines, fence posts, trees etc., as we drove down the highway. This one posed prettily as we were going to see the Wild asses of Kutch.

Notes:

Saw it hovering on one spot...that was a lovely sight.
