Description:

Black and white feathers, red legs and red beak, red eyes, grows to around 50cm, high pitched call, wary of intruders and not easy to approach, nests on beaches in sand scrape. Strong beak is used to dig in sand for molluscs and used for opening hard shells to eat soft bodied creatures inside. They characteristically stand on one leg.
