Annosum root rot

Heterobasidion annosum

Description:

About 8 to 10 inches in width. It was flat and looked about a half inch in depth. Growing under long leaf pine tree. Had small trees growing through it. Was brown and had light colored ring around outside edge. Produces significant losses of conifers across the South. On sandy, well-drained sites, this disease causes growth loss or kills trees. It is most often associated with thinning of loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf, slash, and white pine plantations.

Habitat:

Coastal Hardwood Forest

Notes:

I have two kinds of fungi that may be the ID: Fomes annosus (Annosus root rot) (Heterobasidion annosum) or Redbelt Fungus (Fomitopsis pinicola). Was not attached to the tree or on a dead tree. Redbelt would be more likely on fallin decaying trees.
