Scabrous Puffball

Lycoperdon scabrum

Description:

A dark spiny puffball about 35mm wide. These were seen growing in clumps; some smooth and some spiny. The inside appeared white and fluffy. Pic # 3 is a puff ball which has lost its spines as they do when older.

Habitat:

open grasslands in a reserve

Notes:

The smaller balls are said to be densely covered with soft spines. These spines fall away as the ball expands and matures. The dust-like spores contained inside the ball are dispersed through an apical opening by some sort of impact on the ball, like rain drops.
