Cabbage White (pupa)

Pieris rapae

Description:

The pupa of P. rapae is very close to that of P. napi. It is brown to mottled-gray or greenish, matching the background color. It has a large head cone, with a vertical abdomen and flared subdorsal ridge. The two (pupa of P. rapae and P. napi) can be easily distinguished by comparing the proboscis sheath. In P. rapae, the proboscis sheath extends far beyond the antennal sheath while in P. napi, only a very short distance

Habitat:

Pieris rapae inhabits open land, especially agricultural land. The butterfly is observed more rarely also in larger woodland clearings or grove dominated habitats. The caterpillars live in contrast to those of Pieris napi more in the full sun. I found them also in clearings in a floodplain woodland on Reseda. The distribution extends from north Africa across Europe, Asia to Japan. Elsewhere Pieris rapae was naturalized (Australia, USA).
