Platalea leueorodia regia
Native to New Zealand originating from Australia. First recorded in New Zealand in the 1940's. Spotted several at Western Springs Lake, Auckland.
Mark they have been breeding here since about 1949. There are several colonies around Auckland and other parts of the country. Possibly blown over across the Tasman during the storms you send our way :)
Aha.. so they've jumped the ditch too. Not really surprised when you see how high they fly to migrate down from Indonesia... thunderstorm height.
