White-tailed deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

That the reserve is home to deer is well known but these mammals are often only seen for fleeting moments in the distance. On this particular day, I saw signs of their life cycle – caught sight of tracks crossing a creek, saw a deer in the underbrush watching me across another creek and then came across the remains of another individual that lost its life only a couple weeks earlier. It may have fallen prey to a coyote.

Habitat:

Mason Farm Biological Reserve
