Gaturamo-verdadeiro

Euphonia violacea

Description:

The Gaturamo-Verdadeiro measures between 11 and 12 cm and weighs about 15 g (male). The species show sexual dimorphism: The male has blue-metallic top, a yellow spot on the forehead and yellow bottoms. One of the best imitators. A single male can manifest in a few minutes the voice 10-16 different bird species. Are perfect imitations, but translated into their own reduced vocal strength. The tanager repertoire becomes a true copy of the avifauna of the region in which you live.

Habitat:

It is common in forest edges, gallery forests, clearings, gardens, cocoa plantations and citrus fruit plantations, dense trees in parks, avoiding more arid open areas. Found in Brazilian Amazon, east of the Negro and Madeira rivers in the Northeast (except for the area of caatinga vegetation , and heading south to the Rio Grande do Sul. Also found in Guyana, Venezuela, Paraguay and Argentina.

Notes:

Live in pairs or small groups and joins frequently to mixed flocks of birds. Besides being very appreciated for its melodious song, the male usually imitate the vocalizations of a wide variety of species such as hawks, parrots, toucans and crows.
