A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Cardinalis cardinalis
The Northern Cardinal is a bright red mid-sized songbird with a body length of 21 centimeters (8.3 inches). It has a distinctive crest on the head and a mask on the face which is black.
The garden is about half an acre of native plants specifically planted for wildlife. The main water source is a pond that is filtered by two gravel streams. It is on a peninsula by Lake Lewisville.
Northern Cardinal is mainly granivorous, but also feeds on insects and fruit. The male behaves territorially, marking out his territory with song.
