Russula sp.
Smooth moist french-grey caps with deep grey depressed centres about 60mm wide. The cap appeared to thin out slightly, towards the margins. Younger caps were uniformly brownish-grey, as seen in pic #3. Stipe about 45mm high was white, smooth and plain. Gills, the same colour as the stipe were crowded.
These mushrooms were growing in clusters under leaf litter in open grass
These mushrooms looked very similar to those we used to collect from under pine trees (especially after monsoon rains and thunderstorms) in the hills in South India. I never found out what they were called or their scientific name. they were absolutely delicious !! the only ones we were allowed to collect as kids..they always had earwigs under the caps ! My thanks go to CorduneanuVlad for his assistance with identifying the genus. ? Russula aff. albonigra ( G.Gates & D. Ratkowsky, Field Guide to Tasmanian Fungi )
