Crested Lark

Galerida cristata

Description:

Small birds about the size, shape and colour of the domestic sparrow...the same shaded streaky grey. The only immediate difference that can be seen is the crest that gives it the name.

Habitat:

Usually sitting on the ground where their colouration makes it near impossible to spot them.

Notes:

The birds fly in flocks staying close to the ground where they blend in so well that I would have stepped on them had they been immobile. Very difficult to photograph because they keep flying a short distance away and settling down so you take a couple of steps forward thinking it is no big deal...and whirrr the flock flies off again. They can do this the whole day; I was a tourist on a schedule so only these two semi-Ok shots. I deleted the rest thinking OH! These birds are quite common...I'll get better shots...
